The Future

Description

An Overview of the Future Simple

A future verb form is used to describe an action that will take place in the future, e.g.: Io verrò domani ("I will come tomorrow"). It can be used for actions that will happen soon or far in the future.

How to form the futur

The future is formed by attaching an ending to end a root (based on the infinitive). For verbs ending in -are, change the a to e and add the following endings : ò, ai, à, emo, ete, anno, for example,

futur simple Translation
Io parlerò "I will speak"
tu parlerai "you will speak"
lui, lei, Lei, egli parlerà "he, she will speak"
noi parleremo "we will speak"
voi parlerete "you will speak"
loro, essi parleranno "they will speak"

For verbs ending in -ere or ire, simply drop the final e and add the future endings above, for example:

Future Translation
Io prenderò "I will take"
tu prenderai "you will take"
lui, lei, Lei, egli prenderà "he, she will take"
noi prenderemo "we will take"
voi prenerete "you will take"
loro, essi parleranno "they will take"

A small number of common verbs form their future with an irregular, shortened root:

andare, Io andrò

avere, Io avrò

cadre, Io cadrò

dovere, Io dovrò

essere, Io sarò

potere, Io potrò

sapere, Io saprò

vedere, Io vedrò

vivere, Io vivrò

The Present Future

In many cases, future events are indicated by the present tense, for example, Lo faccio domani ("I will do it tomorrow").
